An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by
February 2023
Ed Yong is a wonderful science communicator, and this book is a lovely testament to that. It’s an exploration of the sensory worlds (“Umwelten”) of different animals, which are like windows onto the world around us—a world which is generally not perceptible to humans because we don’t share the same sensory systems. The books is divided into chapters dealing with individual senses, and it concludes with a sobering account of how humans have damaged or destroyed so many Umwelten in the Anthropocene, including our own.
