The Song of Achilles by
February 2024
Another gorgeous book by Madeline Miller. I wasn’t as emotionally wrapped up in this as I was in Circe (perhaps because I’m predisposed to dislike Achilles, even though he’s written very sympathetically here). But despite that, and although I knew how the story of Achilles and Patroclus ended, I found myself getting a little misty-eyed in the last pages anyway. Miller certainly knows how to write engaging characters, and it’s almost impossible not to be moved. But my favorite character of all here was Thetis, Achilles mother: majestic, seemingly heartless, utterly chilling, totally fabulous.
