Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor

February 2025

I can’t seem to stop reading creepy watery stories, and I’m okay with that. Lagoon is a great addition to the growing list. This “alien invasion” story starts on a small scale, with three strangers converging on a beach in Lagos, and it gradually expands and grows ever wilder to encompass the whole city, all of Nigeria, and presumably eventually the world. It’s not like any first-contact story I’ve ever read, and I enjoyed being immersed in its dark weirdness. The book is wonderfully visual, with a lot of striking and disturbing imagery, and it covers a lot of narrative territory as it follows multiple characters on their adventures through Lagos as the city breaks apart and reassembles itself in the wake of the alien arrival. I found it more engaging the more I read it, and I could imagine reading a sequel (if one were to be written at some point).
