The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks

April 2006

This was the second Culture novel I read after Consider Phlebas. The Player of Games is a rather strange novel about an expert game-player sent off to a distant planet by the Culture to play the ultimate game, where the stakes are life and death and the prize is to rule an entire planet. The Player of Games is much more contained than either Consider Phlebas or The Algebraist in that there’s less dashing around from planet to planet and more exploration of one man’s state of mind - though there’s enough action to keep you alert. It’s an interesting, intriguing and exciting book, and I enjoyed it a great deal.
