This short but dense book provides a brilliant description of the decryption of the mysterious Linear B script from Crete in the 1950s. The story comes almost straight from the horses mouth, as the book was written by the partner of the man who actually deciphered the script, Michael Ventris. I was turned on to this book after reading the wonderful Code Book by Simon Singh. It’s a fascinating, exciting tale, but you do have to have a certain level of interest in the intricacies of noun declensions and verb tenses. Weirdly, I do, so I thought this book was great.
