A Desolation Called Peace by
I enjoyed the first book in this series - A Memory Called Empire - well enough, but I really, really liked this second one. While A Memory Called Empire was all about the political intrigue and interpersonal relations, A Desolation Called Peace is a full-on first-contact space opera which carries you along for an exciting ride while simultaneously exploring ideas about language and identity and different concepts of what it means to be a “person”. I found it all quite riveting, often harrowing, and occasionally heartbreaking. Great stuff.
