A Wonderful, Wonderful Chair

Thursday, May 9th, 2002

For a week now, I have had the pleasure of perching upon a nice, new office chair. So what?, you think. Well, this is not just any old chair. Oh no. This chair is The Best Chair in the World.

Yes, I have succumbed to the charms of the Herman Miller Aeron chair.

Since the vast majority of my day is spent sitting in front of my computer, and since I’ve got a bad back to begin with, I decided to ditch my £14 put-it-together-yourself stool and go for something a bit nicer - and a heck of a lot more expensive.

I tormented myself with this decision, wondering how I possibly justify shelling out such a tremendous amount of money on something that, at the end of the day, is just someplace to park my bum. After I finally gave in and ordered the thing (from Home Working Solutions - a company I can highly recommend), I started having anxiety dreams (I’m dead serious here) about the chair showing up and being all rusty and old and falling apart. And when it finally did show up - in pristine condition - I spent two days attempting to gauge exactly how much more comfortable this chair was compared to my old chair, and how much this added comfort was worth.

And now, a week on, all doubts have disappeared. No price can be put on this comfort. I am in love with this chair. I love every minute I’m sitting in it, and when I’m not sitting in it, I look over at it and wish I was. I now understand why all those dot-coms went broke on the Aeron chair - it’s impossible to resist. It’s smooth and springy and sexy and quite simply a wonderful, wonderful chair.

And no, I am not in any way affiliated with Herman Miller - but if they wanted to pay me a little something for the free advertising, I could probably do with the money now…

I know of a certain mail room, in the Northwest, that has one rolling around! Anyone up for another trip to Seattle…with an SUV?
