Where the snakes and scorpions roam

No, it’s not Mars. This is a picture of a small part (!) of the Grand Canyon taken from about 39,000 feet in the air. We flew over it two days ago on the British Airways flight that whisked us from London to Phoenix (if flying for ten-and-a-half hours can be considered "whisking"). Along the way, we saw ice floes around Iceland, mountains and glaciers in Greenland, and this - some of the most incredible views of the Grand Canyon imaginable. As far as scenery went, it was a fantastic flight. We live on an amazing and awe-inspiring planet.
And now we’re in Arizona, where the iced tea flows in rivers, it’s one hundred degrees (Farenheit!) in the shade, and it’s a matter of course to eat burritos the size of your head. Cool. It’s nice to be home.

Hope you are not endangered by the fire. I don’t know where exactly it’s burning. (And Arizona is big anyway.)

The fire is very far away from my home town, but on our road trip we drove through the town of Show Low - and four days later, Show Low and the surrounding towns were evacuated because this enormous fire was just about to sweep through. As we were driving around up there we got some pictures of the fire just after it had started (you can see some of them on Jeremy’s site - www.adactio.com). Little did we realize that we were taking pictures of what would turn out to be the biggest fire in the history of Arizona - and perhaps the nation. Very scary.

As I learned this evening, the Firefighters in an outstanding effort managed to save the town, at least this far. Perhaps soon the citizens may return to their homes. That was close, eh?
