The Fellowship of the Obsessed.
Thursday, February 6th, 2003
I’m sitting here listening to my newly purchased Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack and practically panting with excitement at the thought that in just three days I will be going to see this: the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing the Fellowship of the Ring score, conducted by Howard Shore.
I guess you could say that I’ve become well and truly obsessed with this whole Lord of the Rings thing. I was just saying to Jeremy today that this is really the first time since the I saw the Star Wars movies as a kid that I’ve been so… so all-encompassed by a series of films. It makes me feel like a kid all over again, in fact. In some ways, I really do feel as if I’ve been waiting my whole life for movies like these - fantastic, dark, beautiful, epic, enthralling…
You get the picture. Anyway, it’s the score of the movies that has gripped me as much as anything, which is somewhat surprising seeing as I’m not usually a soundtrack-buying type of person. But the music that Howard Shore has composed is utterly entrancing to me, so when I happened to see in the Guardian that he would be conducting the London Philharmonic on February 9th, I didn’t even hesitate to call up and get tickets.
So on Sunday I’m off to the symphony! How civilized. Until then, I’ll listen to my soundtrack and brush up on my Elvish so that I can sing along with the choral pieces. (I’m kidding. Of course.)
