June Moon

Just by chance, Jeremy and I got to see this amazing giant moon in the sky last week. On a whim last Wednesday, we decided to wander into Hove and find someplace nice to eat - partially in celebration of Jeremy becoming a member of the illustrious Web Standards Project, and partially so that we could both get far away from our computers and our respective writing tasks for at least a few hours. It was a beautiful evening, so we wandered quite far and found ourselves at Coriander, an absolutely delightful little restaurant tucked away on a side street near the seafront. It was just what we needed - a friendly, low-key, smoke-free, cozy environment with extremely tasty food.

After indulging in the Moroccan/Mexican cuisine (Coriander’s got kind of a "world food" vibe going on), we headed back home along the beach. It was approaching 11 o’clock, but the sky was still light in the west where the sun was going down - and, strangely, it was also light in the east, where a second sun appeared to be rising out of the sea. I couldn’t even believe that it was the moon at first - it was so tremendous and fiery. There were a lot of people sitting on the beach, and a lot of other people had leaned against the railings on the promenade to watch the spectacle. Every second person seemed to have a camera phone, and the beach was dotted with tiny glowing screens as people tried (in vain, I’m sure) to capture the event on film.

Jeremy and I didn’t even try. We just walked along quietly, watching the rising moon, listening to the water lap gently against the stones. It was a welcome respite from the daily grind, and even though I know the huge tangerine moon was just an optical illusion, it was still magical to me.
