Be a better foodie

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Tonight I got to combine my love of food with my love of trivia quizzes in one great big fun event: a foodie trivia quiz!

Fellow foodies Richard and Wendy tipped Jeremy and me off to the “Be a better foodie” quiz at the Real Eating Company in Lewes. For £20, we got a glass of sparkling wine, a two-course meal, and the opportunity to take part in a food quiz to win some nice prizes (free wine, free dinners, free cheese!).

I was feeling pretty confident about my foodie knowledge in the run-up to the quiz—probably too confident. I know more about food than the average person, but I don’t know as much as a hardcore foodie, and when we arrived at the Real Eating Company and saw our competitors, they looked like pretty hardcore foodies.

Indeed, the quiz turned out to be much trickier—and much more extensive—than I was anticipating. But with our combined knowledge, Wendy, Rich, Jeremy and I held our own and managed to maintain a joint third-place ranking throughout most of the quiz (we were continually neck and neck with the table of friendly people right next to us).

Ultimately, we were defeated by a tough “name that utensil” round, and our “Gastrocats” team (don’t ask) wound up in fourth place at the end of the quiz—pretty good considering there were about 12 teams overall. So we didn’t win a prize, but we did learn a few new foodie facts (I don’t think I’ll soon forget that “tomalley” is lobster liver), we got to take home a nifty goodie bag with cheese, oatcakes and chocolates, and—best of all—we had a lovely dinner with excellent company. What more could you ask from a Wednesday night?

Also, that ‘bistro’ is from ‘bystro’ the Russian for rapidly. Top night - thanks for your company and gastro-knowledge.
