Too big to bake for.

Monday, July 7th, 2008

I mentioned yesterday that I don’t bake cake-like things very often. It’s not just because whenever I bake it looks like a flour bomb exploded in my kitchen, or even because, when you make cakes yourself, you’re confronted first-hand with just how ludicrously “bad for you” a really good cake is.

It’s also because there are only two people in my household, and that’s really not enough to polish off a whole layer cake / loaf of banana bread / dozen cupcakes before they turn as hard as rocks—particularly not when one of those people (Jeremy) has almost no sweet tooth at all, and the other (me) generally has her craving for sugar satisfied after just a few bites of something sweet.

The thing is, despite the mess and all the rest of it, sometimes I just want to bake a whole layer cake / loaf of banana bread / dozen cupcakes. But what to do with the surplus baked goods?

This problem was solved neatly when Jeremy started working full-time at Clearleft a few years ago: I would simply send him off to work with little Tupperware boxes or tinfoil packets of baked things, and he would share the stuff with his workmates. And everyone’s a winner.

Things are slightly more difficult now, however. In a very short period of time, Clearleft has blossomed from two to three to five to six to eight full-timers. And if you take into account the various freelancers and interns who might be working in the office, not to mention the odd visitor who swings by to chill on the couch and use the WiFi (as I am also wont to do), then there could be upwards of 10 people in the office at any given time.

So if I bake a dozen cupcakes, eat one to test it and make sure it’s not vile (hey, it’s gotta be done), and then send Jeremy off to the office with, say, 10 cupcakes just to be on the safe side, that leaves me with—do the math—just a single cupcake. And frankly, a single cupcake is simply not enough, not even in my sweet-tooth-lacking house.

Clearly, I’m either going to have to start baking twice as much of everything, or I’m going to have to admit with some regret that Clearleft has grown too big to bake for.

And this is my convenient excuse for hoarding all 12 of the mocha cupcakes I made yesterday afternoon. Only (ahem) 7 of which are still left.
