It’s John Wick if John Wick were an eccentric 60-something woman living in a rural village in Poland, making a “nuisance” of herself with the local authorities and translating William Blake on the side. This thriller was a fun read and I genuinely didn’t see the twist coming at the end. Since The Empusium was the first Tokarczuk book I read, I really did think the animals might have been committing the murders. I felt great affection towards the characters, and I enjoyed immersing myself in the environment of the book (especially the wintery scenes in the first chapters). I didn’t love it as much as The Empusium, but I did like it very much.
