Inversions by Iain M. Banks

I enjoyed this novel immensely—way more than Jeremy, in fact—probably because it’s an Iain M. Banks SF book wrapped up in a fantasy cloak. The book follows two characters in competing, somewhat medieval societies, and it explores aspects of friendship, power and manipulation. On the surface, it’s miles away from your typical Banks SF novel, but (without wanting to give too much away) on closer inspection, those familiar with the Culture novels might find things of interest to them here…
