As a foodie—and, specifically, an Italian food fanatic—I loved this book. Though it’s an unflinching portrait of life in a professional kitchen, it doesn’t have the macho swagger that put me off Kitchen Confidential. Instead, it’s funny, moving, educational and inspiring. It made me not just want to eat the delicious food Buford describes, but to cook it myself—not in a professional kitchen, however.
