River Town by Peter Hessler

September 2012

I read this after it was recommended to me by two different people. I didn’t previously have any particular interest in China, but this book certainly awakened one. It’s a fascinating account of a Peace Corps volunteer going to a Sichuan town to teach English. I related to a lot of the “stranger in a strange land” experiences, but they were magnified a million times over for the author, one of only two Westerners in a town which hadn’t ever seen Westerners before. I really enjoyed this and want to read the follow-up, Oracle Bones.
