Roadside shrine
Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005
This little shrine is located on the road into Bisbee, Arizona. It was apparently built by two brothers who went off to fight in World War II and constructed the shrine upon their safe return home. Someone lights the candles every evening. On a recent nighttime trip back from Bisbee, we parked the car at the shrine, turned off the engine and lights, and got out. The candles cast a somewhat eerie, somewhat comforting glow in the otherwise pitch-black Arizona night. After our eyes adjusted to the darkness, we could make out the mantle of stars overhead, which swept in a glittering curtain right down to the tops of the quiet mountains.
