One minute update

Monday, May 9th, 2005

Well, despite the wonders of satellite technology, I haven’t been able to blog from the boat after all, so right now I’m sitting in the Highliner Coffee Company in the great little town of Sitka, Alaska, drinking an iced latte because it’s 75 and sunny out, and typing like a maniac because I only have a few minutes of Internet access left and the boat is leaving in half an hour anyway. We were supposed to be underway already, actually, but either engineering problems or perhaps a late shipment of Dungeness crab delayed us for a few hours this afternoon - but I’m not complaining, because it’s nice to kick back for a little bit and to finally have the opportunity to post the last blog entry, which I wrote days ago…

We’ve been having a fantastic time. The weather has been warm and beautiful for days now, which is quite unusual for Alaska; my long johns have remained packed away in the closet, and I’ve had to buy T-shirts instead. We’ve seen loads of amazing things: orcas, humpback whales, bald eagles, Dall’s porpoise, harbor seals, sea lions, waterfalls, the aurora borealis, glaciers (from a float plane), icebergs (from a little boat) and many, many amazing vistas with snow-covered mountains, sparkling water, sheer cliffs, blue sky and seemingly endless expanses of trees. Needless to say, I’ve been taking pictures out the wazoo - but unfortunately I can’t get access to Flickr on the boat either, so I guess the pictorial version of my travelogue will have to wait until I’m back on dry land again.

Well, my Internet time is almost up, so it’s time to cruise - literally!
